Project Overview
This project involved designing a complete football fantasy application, giving users a place to build fantasy teams, follow live match performance, compete in leagues with friends, and track their standing across a season. I was responsible for designing the full app experience end to end, from onboarding new users into the world of fantasy football to the ongoing week-to-week engagement loops that keep fantasy platforms compelling throughout an entire season.
Project Goals
The goals of this project were to design an app that balanced statistical depth with everyday accessibility; to make live match-day moments feel exciting and immediate through real-time visual feedback; to simplify the ongoing complexity of managing squads, transfers, and multiple leagues across a full season; and to build in strong social and competitive hooks that would encourage organic growth through friend leagues and shared rivalries.
Project Challenges
Fantasy sports apps face a unique design challenge because they need to serve both die-hard football fans who want deep statistics and granular control over their team, and more casual users who simply want to pick some players and follow along without being overwhelmed.
Balancing that depth versus simplicity was the central tension throughout the project. There was also the challenge of designing for a highly time-sensitive, live experience, since fantasy football engagement spikes dramatically around match days and live scoring moments, meaning the interface needed to make real-time point changes and live standings feel exciting and immediate rather than static or delayed. Team and league management also needed to feel effortless, since juggling multiple leagues, transfers, and lineup changes across a long season can quickly become confusing if not organized carefully.
My Approach
I began by mapping the full seasonal user journey, from initial team drafting, through weekly lineup changes, to live match-day tracking and end-of-season results, identifying the key moments where users needed either more guidance or more control. I designed a drafting and squad-building experience that surfaced key player statistics and recent form without overwhelming new users, while giving experienced players quick access to deeper filtering and comparison tools. For match days, I focused heavily on live-updating scoreboards and point trackers, using clear visual feedback and subtle motion cues to make each goal, assist, or bonus point feel satisfying to watch unfold in real time. League and rivalry features were designed to feel social and competitive, with clear standings, head-to-head comparisons, and shareable results to encourage users to invite friends and stay engaged across the full season.
What I Delivered
I delivered the complete app design, including onboarding and account setup, squad drafting and team-building flows, a transfer market for making weekly changes, live match-day scoring and point-tracking screens, league creation and management tools, standings and leaderboard views, player statistics and comparison pages, and push notification and alert designs to keep users engaged around key match events. The final deliverable included a full component library and design system to support the app through an entire football season and beyond.
The Outcome
The completed design gave the platform a strong foundation for driving the kind of sustained, season-long engagement that fantasy football products depend on, with particular strength in the live match-day experience, which stakeholders identified as the most emotionally engaging part of the app. The balance between simplicity for new users and depth for experienced players meant the platform could appeal to a much wider audience than a purely stats-heavy competitor product, without alienating its most dedicated users. League and social features designed to encourage invites also positioned the app well for organic, word-of-mouth growth driven by friend groups competing against each other throughout the season.
